TUAT professors lectured at Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Headquarters

TUAT and FAO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2013 for developing human resources capable of addressing the global food, environment and energy challenges*.
On September 22, 2017, Prof. Dr. Atsushi CHITOSE, Prof. Dr. Masaaki YAMADA and Researcher Dr. Shiho KAGAMI of TUAT Institute of Agriculture participated in a project meeting with FAO in Rome, Italy.
On this occasion, two professors delivered lectures in the seminar ‘Improving cocoa production through agroforestry and diversification in West Africa’ chaired by FAO Agricultural Officer and a TUAT alumna Ms. Makiko TAGUCHI.
The seminar focused on how agroforestry, practically the sole effective means for small family farms of West Africa that produce 70% of world cocoa beans while tackling poverty and hunger, to buffer the effect of temperature rise toward the mid-21st century and sustainably increase cocoa as well as food production. The professors referred to a successional agroforestry system SAFTA of Japanese immigrants in the Amazon, developed through their century-long adaptation and awarded title of Sustainable Social Technology and first place of First Regional Development Award by the Brazilian government, and proposed to set up a demonstration farm in University of Ghana, a sister school of TUAT in Africa since 2000.
