式辞
このたびは、中国竞彩网大学院連合農学研究科へのご入学、誠におめでとうございます。本日こうして皆様に直接お祝いの言葉をお伝えできますことを、教職員一同心よりお喜び申し上げます。
中国竞彩网大学院連合農学研究科は1985年に創設され、今年度が40年目にあたる長い歴史を刻む日本で初めて連合方式で設立された博士課程大学院です。農学研究科を持つ国立大学が次々と参画し、日本全国で最大20大学によって構成される、極めて大きな大学院運営組織となりました。この間に、多くの博士号取得者を輩出し、それは国内に止まらず、世界各国からの留学生を迎え、アジア、アフリカ、南米等、勢いを増す国々の基盤となる人材の育成も行ってきました。これまでに海外から来られ、本学で博士号を取得された方の中には、母国の政府や大学を牽引するお立場になって大いに活躍されている方も多くいらっしゃいます。農学という、各国国民の生活そのものを支える基盤作りになくてはならない分野における教育研究の意義も益々高まっており、このような大学院教育のあり方は極めて重要であることは、近年の世界を取り巻く状況を見ると明らかであります。また、日本の国内では一極集中による弊害から、地域の活性化の重要性が叫ばれ、また、世界的な食料、環境、感染症の問題等については、一部の国や特定の学問領域だけで解決できるものではないことは明白です。農業生産に関わる温室効果ガスの排出、急速に進行する土壌の劣化、海洋汚染や、世界的な都市化の進行など、地球規模では、毎日食べるものが手に入ることなど決して当たり前のことでなくなってしまいました。この、すでに限界を超えてしまった地球の状態を持続可能な姿に戻すためには、私たち人類が自然の中の一員に過ぎないことを認識し、自然と共生する社会システムをしっかり作り直すこと、そしてそこにつながる研究の推進と実践に繋げることが急務です。
皆様は正に、このような先進的かつ中核的な取り組みを理念とする本学の博士課程において、研究活動に邁進する道を自ら選択し、その貴重な機会を獲得されたことは本当に素晴らしいことです。世界は今、先端技術開発だけではなく、無形の資産?価値を拡張する力を持つ新たなリーダーを強く求めています。すなわち、科学的な探求を深め、先端技術をもって社会実装を牽引するだけに止まらず、自然や地球環境を複眼的な視点で見つめ守りながら、全ての人が生きがいを感じ、未来に希望を持てる社会の実現に向けた活動を実践できる人こそが必要となっています。そのためにはそれぞれの研究分野における高度な専門性を基盤に、人文?社会科学と自然科学の融合による総合知を活用することによって、社会課題の解決策を探る力が不可欠です。本当に重要な事を見極め、自ら手を上げてそこに挑戦することこそが重要なのです。自ら積極的に意見交換の場をつくり、人を惹きつけチームを形成すること、そのための明確な展望や交渉に臨む力も求められます。私はこのような人こそ、これからの博士のあるべき姿そのものであり、それはこれから皆様が目標とされる、大学院で活動する意義そのものであると思っています。もちろん、単に学術研究における先端性、独創性を越えたこのような課題の実現の道はとても険しいものです。特に科学的な探求を目指す博士課程においては、自分が取り組むべきものについて、とかく視野が狭くなり、周りが見えなくなることも多いものだと思います。何かに没頭できることは本当に素晴らしいことであり、是非皆様には存分にそのような時間を過ごしていただきたいと思いますが、その活動も実は周りの人たちに支えられており、常に社会との繋がりの中で成り立っていることを決して忘れずにいていただきたいです。大学での学びが社会でどのように役立てられるのかをイメージするためには、複数の専門領域を持つことによって横断的な思考を行うことも不可欠です。夢中になって切り拓かれた学問の新しい世界が、多様な文化的な背景や価値観を理解し、受入れることにより、最終的に実際に社会としっかり繋がったとき、そのときこそ皆様の博士としての役割が本当に大きく広がる瞬間であると思います。
皆様が、この大学院の博士課程で、ご自身の力を存分に伸ばし、だれも到達したことのない新しい世界を開かれますことを心よりお祈りし、私のお祝いの挨拶といたします。

Ceremonial Address
Congratulations on your enrollment in the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. All of us at TUAT would like to extend our sincere congratulations to you today.
TUAT's United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences was established in 1985, and this academic year marks the 40th anniversary of its establishment as Japan's first doctoral graduate school established in a federation style. National universities with Graduate Schools of Agricultural Science have joined one after another, making it an extremely large graduate school management organization consisting of up to 20 universities in Japan. During this period, the graduate school has produced many doctoral degree holders, not only in Japan, but has also welcomed students from all over the world and nurtured human resources who will serve as the foundation for countries in Asia, Africa, South America, and other regions that are gaining momentum. Many of those who have come from abroad and obtained their doctoral degrees at TUAT are now playing very active roles in leading their home countries' governments and universities. The significance of education and research in the fieldof agriculture, which is indispensable for building the foundation that supports the very livelihood of the people of each country, is increasing, and it is clear from the recent global situation that this type of graduate education is extremely important. In addition, the importance of regional revitalization is being called for in Japan due to the adverse effects of the concentration of resources in a single region, and it is clear that global issues such as food, the environment, and infectious diseases cannot be solved by a few countries or specific academic fields alone. Greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural production, rapid soil degradation, ocean pollution, and global urbanization have made it no longer possible to take for granted the availability of daily food on a global scale. In order to return the earth to a sustainable state that has already exceeded its limits, it is imperative that we recognize that we humans are merely members of nature, and that we must firmly rebuild a social system that coexists in harmony with nature, and promote research and practice that will lead to this goal.
?It is truly wonderful that you have chosen to pursue your research activities in our university's doctoral program, which is based on the philosophy of such advanced and core initiatives, and that you have obtained this valuable opportunity. The world is now in great need of new leaders who have the ability to extend intangible assetsand values beyond the development of cutting-edge technologies. In other words, we need people who can not only deepen scientific inquiry and lead social implementation with cutting-edge technology, but who can also look at and protect nature and the global environment from multiple perspectives, and who can implement activities to realize a society in which all people can feel fulfilled in their lives and have hope for the future. To achieve this, it is essential to have the ability to search for solutions to social issues by utilizing comprehensive knowledge based on advanced expertise in each research field and by integrating the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. It is important to identify what is truly important, and to take up the challenge to do so. You must be able to proactively create opportunities to exchange opinions, attract people and form teams, and have a clear vision and the ability to negotiate. I believe that this type of person is the ideal doctoral candidate of the future, and is the very reason why you are pursuing your goals and graduate school activities. Of course, the road to realization of such a task, which goes beyond mere cutting-edge and originality in academic research, is a very steep one.
?Especially in a doctoral program that aims at scientific exploration, it is common for students to become narrow-minded and lose sight of their surroundings when itcomes to what they should be working on. It is truly wonderful to be able to devote yourself to something, and I hope that you will spend as much time as possible doing so, but please never forget that your activities are also supported by the people around you, and that you are always connected to society. In order to envision how your university studies will be useful in society, it is also essential to think cross-culturally by having multiple areas of specialization. When the new world of academic study that you have enthusiastically opened up is finally connected to society through understanding and accepting diverse cultural backgrounds and values, that is the moment when your role as a doctoral student will truly expand.
I wish you all the best in your doctoral studies at this graduate school, and I sincerely hope that you will develop your abilities to the fullest and open up a new world that no one has ever reached before.
